Snow business!

Another mild weekend has stripped the mountains in Scotland of what little snow cover they had. With the ski slopes looking like this shot of Glenshee taken last Friday, it now seems likely that this will be one of the poorest years on record for the Scottish skiiing industry. Back in the 1980s when I used to be a really keen skier and winters knew how to 'do' winter, the snow was much more reliable. You could be sure of snow from New Year right through until Easter and beyond. You never really had to check snow conditions. The only phone call (no Internet then!) that you had to make was to check that the roads were open. And just to prove that my memory isn't playing tricks on me or that I'm viewing the past through rose tinted goggles, I have scanned some old photos taken back then.
The first two were taken in February 1983.....
A glorious 'Alpine' day at Cairngorm

....and a not-so-glorious Arctic day at Glenshee. What lovely, long, slim skis we used in 'those days'! No carvers then.

A year later in February 1984 , this was the view at Glenshee....

...snowdrifts as big as people ..... not to mention the very stylish jackets!

Which brings us back to February 2007... (whatever happened to those 23 years?!)

There is, of course, one place in Scotland with reliable snow these days......

.... but it's just not quite the same as the real thing, is it?
