Geography : My Place and Yours: What are you doing this summer?

You could be exploring tropical rainforest in the Amazon this summer or working with desert elephants in Namibia just by answering the question "Can recycling save the world?"

Now into its seventh year, the Geographical magazine's Young Geographer of the Year competition aims to inspire and encourage the next generation of geographers, travellers and explorers...

"We want your ideas on this crucial issue. We want our younger readers to design an exciting magazine cover that shows how important this subject is for our planet. For older readers, we want a magazine article that brings the issue to life. It can be in any style you wish – a dramatic first-person report, a balanced and reasoned argument, a report on one crucial aspect of the debate or any interview with a key figure. But it must inspire and enthral; it must make us all think about the world’s future."

There are three age categories for this competition:

Junior
(12 and under on 31st August 2007) design a magazine front cover (A3 size)
Young
(13-15 on 31st August 2007) – write a magazine article (word limit: 800 words)
Senior
(16-18 on 31st August 2007) – write a magazine article (word limit: 1600 words)

Your teachers will talk to you in class about the competition. It would be great to have some entries from HSD and even more wonderful if one of you could win one of the fabulous prizes!
